Catch of the Day
Thanking a donor this morning, I added, “Last night, I couldn’t write at the café and was so exhausted, I knocked my tea cup over. Going home, I stopped at a park to watch kids play, so ended up with a photo of that little girl laughing. Any child’s happiness heals...” My catch of the day also shows her little brother, no older than three, momentarily bathed by joy. They had to toys, just sand, but it’s more than enough.
A boy in the next bench was pouting, however, so his aunt tried to console him.
“Do you want fried chicken?”
“No!” He said in English. In Vietnamese, it would be “không,” or, if he’s really mannered, “dạ không.” With more English lessons, he’ll soon snap, “Fuck no!”
“A Coca Cola?”
“No!”
“Do you want to go to the village?” Về quê.
Suddenly, there’s no more “No!” He’s thinking it over. The countryside beats this city park. You, too, should interrupt that 14-piece extra crispy feast and, I don’t know, oink your way to the mailbox? Undress to let air ventilate your root chakra. This morning, I woke to an announcement of a new novel. Jewish Tova Reich’s Camp Jeff has been published by Jewish Dan Simon, to a chorus of Jewish praise. A “brazen indictment of contemporary masculinity,” Camp Jeff depicts a Borscht Belt reeducation camp for “#MeToo offenders caught in the hashtag.” It’s founded by a “good Jeffrey Epstein”:
