Epic interview, Linh. Dude is a legend. Not that anyone reads anymore, but a novelization of his life would be fascinating and a nice companion piece to Houllebeq's 'Submission'.

Thanks for your interesting interview with a rather uncommon personality from Down-Under !!!

This fellow has had a journey of varied and epic proportions. It sounds as if he has fully finished his "circle game of Western life".

...and NJ below suggests Houllebeq's "Submission", so off to the library.

This is how education gets done.

Steve, you're an interesting guy for sure - and obviously you're really smart - you learned DANISH for god's sake?! - a linguist once told me he'd tried to learn the language on a whim and ended up throwing the book on the wall while yelling 'it's impossible!' - fare thee well, you decent human being

I found Danish was pretty easy to learn. Having once learned the correct pronunciation of the alphabet which has 3 extra letters over English, and because they sound the same every time without the strange rules of English to mess things up it was a simple language in its way. Also words are either written very similarly to English or English derived from the same Viking tongue the similarities are consistent. English was formed as a language from many Viking words in fact. Recall the Viking occupation of England which only preceded Henry Chaucer's Canterbury Tales by a few years. That was near the birth of the English language in time frame. Danish has remained much simpler as such given it is only spoken by a small number of people and hasn't developed so much from other languages to become as vast and varied. Danish is in some respects the fore of the English language to put it another way.

or as a Norwegian comic said, 'Danish has devolved into such a guttural mess, it's on the verge of collapse!'

They're absorbing a lot of English terms now of course and I suppose it is undergoing its own evolution after having travelled fairly pure into modern times. I find Norwegian and Swedish to be similarly understandable for similar reasons to Danish. At least in written form.

If I can't trust her to come home and need to chase after her every time It's not much of a commitment. I want to be wanted. I already ran all over the world to get her here but struggled to get her home every time we went back. Something broke when her father died. I aged very hard and fast when she dipped out.
