I just had a three-day visit from an American friend. An expat in his early 50’s, Josh (not his real name) has spent 15 years in Asia, including 1 1/2 in Vietnam. Walking around with Josh, however, I realized he knew next to nothing about the country. When I mentioned Vo Nguyen Giap or Nguyen Cao Ky, Josh had no idea whom I was talking about. He couldn’t read any menu item in Vietnamese, and was unfamiliar with the most ordinary Viet dishes. Several times, Josh even forgot he was in Vung Tau. “What is the name of this place again?” Or, “This is not Nha Trang?” That’s 250 miles up the coast.
It’s not his country, fair enough. Still, Josh confessed he would probably be married to a Vietnamese had Covid not chased him away for two years. Abandoning an incipient love, Josh had left Vietnam voluntarily for a safer location. He flew out of Saigon in a hooded plastic gown.
Even with a common language, it’s hard enough to understand each other, so what sort of marriage could Josh expect if he spoke chicken and she spoke duck, as the Vietnamese saying goes?
Josh is fond of this grand statement by Socrates, “I am not an Athenian or a Greek, but a citizen of the world.” Though an ultra-cool credo for globetrotters, Socrates wouldn’t have lasted a week in Scythia, Persia or The Samartians, much less Văn Lang, a proto-Vietnamese kingdom. I am English and married to a Thai who I met on my first visit here. I wasn't sure how much I would need to live here, so I wrote down everything I spent for the first six months, to see how good a life I could afford on my budget. Seeing this my wife presumed I was short of money and frequently paid for meals, bought me shirts and shorts, and took me on trips in her car.
We have been together for 12 years and are still very happy together. I tried to learn Thai for the first couple of years but couldn't get the hang of the different tones and gave in. My wife and I play golf together and do Sudoku puzzles, and get along very well despite (and probably because) of our different upbringings and language.
I also get along with her two sons from a previous marriage and taught them English. We all get along just fine.
So there you go. Maybe I'm the exception that proves the rule. And maybe not.

After I wrote it struck me that I should have said a bit more about my wife's eldest son who was a bit like Tarzan, in that he could read English but couldn't speak it. I was amazed at his progress when I started to teach him.
Many years before, his mother bought him a second-hand computer which kept breaking down. Repairs at the local store were expensive and very slow, and the only manuals he could find were in English. So he worked out how to understand these very technical manuals even though he couldn't read them out loud, and fixed his computer.
Many westerners think Thais are lazy because they are relaxed and take life as it comes. I have met many who are very smart, and motivated. So I think the future is Asian, or ASEAN - one or t'other.

I was learning French for my first wife, learned Danish for my second and am learning Urdu for my last. I extend my tastes each time but keep some of what I've gathered before too. Having grown up in white middle class Oz, there was a fairly empty palette upon which to paint I guess. None of it makes me anything but a white Aussie boy of course but I guess I'm perfect by the above definition at least. I don't fit in anywhere. Yours was the first piece I read this morning after turning the PC on. Though definitely not a comment on your writing or your observations (perceptive as always!), I wonder if perhaps it was not the best one to start out my on-line day with.
Living in California but far away from its major population centers, I don't see the worst of things in my immediate surroundings yet, mostly just reading about them. This piece plumbs new depths which I should be grateful not to be physically exposed to. I avoid trips to the city now as much as possible, both for reasons of personal safety and because they no longer offer much that I want or need.
I certainly sympathize with impulses like "hands around the throat". But really, who are you going to shoot? It would really be nice if one's country or culture could be fixed that easily. But just as there is no one person that's going to "save" us, there is no one person that can hold the bag for everything that is going wrong. The painful truth is that we are collectively to blame for our culture's failings. Too busy living our lives, or trying to survive, too many of us failed to take the actions necessary to arrest the decline, and now it is probably too late to stop it. Even if one is inclined to try, it is hard to know where to start or what to do when surrounded by corruption. As Confucius said, “Virtue does not remain as an abandoned orphan; it must of necessity have neighbors.”
A good example: Once in a conversation about the evils of excessive money printing, I said that beyond a certain point, the momentum to continue would be unstoppable, and beyond that point, the system would have to blow up before sanity might return. If you woke up to a general announcement that starting at noon, government trucks would be coming by to shovel free money out the door for anyone who needed it, would you take it even though you believed it was wrong to print yet more money? Amos Miller says he is being persecuted by the federal government for practicing his religious freedom to raise and prepare food the way he believes God intended food to be raised and prepared – in accordance with nature.
Miller practices rotational grazing on his small, holistically managed, century old farm in Bird-In-Hand Pennsylvania. His heritage-breed cows are raised on organic pastures, with the chickens following behind, eating the bugs from their dropping, and whey-fed pigs trampling all the fertilizer back into the ground after that.
Around 4000 customers of his private, members-only, food buying club are dependent on his meat, eggs and dairy products, as well as fermented fruits and veggies… and are willing to spend top dollar to get it shipped to them all over the country, as they don’t trust food from the grocery store.
But a couple of weeks ago, a federal judge told Miller to cease and desist all meat sales, and sent armed U.S. marshals to search his property, farm store and freezers. They took an inventory of all his meat to make sure he doesn’t sell any or slaughter anymore animals.
Last summer, the judge also ordered Miller to pay $250,000 for “contempt of court,” and said he will also have to pay the salaries of the USDA investigators assigned to his case, $50,000 of which was due last week as a “good faith” payment to avoid jail.

I am English and married to a Thai who I met on my first visit here. I wasn't sure how much I would need to live here, so I wrote down everything I spent for the first six months, to see how good a life I could afford on my budget. Seeing this my wife presumed I was short of money and frequently paid for meals, bought me shirts and shorts, and took me on trips in her car.
We have been together for 12 years and are still very happy together. I tried to learn Thai for the first couple of years but couldn't get the hang of the different tones and gave in. My wife and I play golf together and do Sudoku puzzles, and get along very well despite (and probably because) of our different upbringings and language.
I also get along with her two sons from a previous marriage and taught them English. We all get along just fine.
So there you go. Maybe I'm the exception that proves the rule. And maybe not.

After I wrote it struck me that I should have said a bit more about my wife's eldest son who was a bit like Tarzan, in that he could read English but couldn't speak it. I was amazed at his progress when I started to teach him.
Many years before, his mother bought him a second-hand computer which kept breaking down. Repairs at the local store were expensive and very slow, and the only manuals he could find were in English. So he worked out how to understand these very technical manuals even though he couldn't read them out loud, and fixed his computer.
Many westerners think Thais are lazy because they are relaxed and take life as it comes. I have met many who are very smart, and motivated. So I think the future is Asian, or ASEAN - one or t'other.

I was learning French for my first wife, learned Danish for my second and am learning Urdu for my last. I extend my tastes each time but keep some of what I've gathered before too. Having grown up in white middle class Oz, there was a fairly empty palette upon which to paint I guess. None of it makes me anything but a white Aussie boy of course but I guess I'm perfect by the above definition at least. I don't fit in anywhere. When the war in Ukraine spreads, Europe is in the greatest danger, but the US is also prone to cyber, emp or even nuclear attacks, so the southern hemisphere should be safer, I agree, but so is a country like Vietnam, I'd think. The main reason I came back here was because I was exhausted from drifting from one country to another. Here in VN, I'm in my element, and in Vung Tau, I have close friends I can have long conversations with, something I couldn't get in Namibia. Plus, the food options in Vung Tau are much, much better than in Windhoek. When you can eat well, especially for cheap, you simply feel better.

Yours was the first piece I read this morning after turning the PC on. Though definitely not a comment on your writing or your observations (perceptive as always!), I wonder if perhaps it was not the best one to start out my on-line day with.
Living in California but far away from its major population centers, I don't see the worst of things in my immediate surroundings yet, mostly just reading about them. This piece plumbs new depths which I should be grateful not to be physically exposed to. I avoid trips to the city now as much as possible, both for reasons of personal safety and because they no longer offer much that I want or need.
I certainly sympathize with impulses like "hands around the throat". But really, who are you going to shoot? It would really be nice if one's country or culture could be fixed that easily. But just as there is no one person that's going to "save" us, there is no one person that can hold the bag for everything that is going wrong. The painful truth is that we are collectively to blame for our culture's failings. Too busy living our lives, or trying to survive, too many of us failed to take the actions necessary to arrest the decline, and now it is probably too late to stop it. Even if one is inclined to try, it is hard to know where to start or what to do when surrounded by corruption. As Confucius said, “Virtue does not remain as an abandoned orphan; it must of necessity have neighbors.”
A good example: Once in a conversation about the evils of excessive money printing, I said that beyond a certain point, the momentum to continue would be unstoppable, and beyond that point, the system would have to blow up before sanity might return. If you woke up to a general announcement that starting at noon, government trucks would be coming by to shovel free money out the door for anyone who needed it, would you take it even though you believed it was wrong to print yet more money? If you are going to survive, you have to.

But a couple of weeks ago, a federal judge told Miller to cease and desist all meat sales, and sent armed U.S. marshals to search his property, farm store and freezers. They took an inventory of all his meat to make sure he doesn’t sell any or slaughter anymore animals.
Last summer, the judge also ordered Miller to pay $250,000 for “contempt of court,” and said he will also have to pay the salaries of the USDA investigators assigned to his case, $50,000 of which was due last week as a “good faith” payment to avoid jail.

So you may be right about Amish not voting, but I think that they do. They are savvy business people. However, there's the Amish, then there are the Mennonites. I am no expert, but I have lived in Lancaster and I have relatives there and I am from PA. My basic explanation is Mennonites are former Amish that decided that accepting a little bit of modernity would make them fabulously rich. A Mennonite can drive a limo, as long as there is no chrome on it. Chrome would be 'fancy' and you can't have that. A Mennonite wedding can be lavish in the spending, but not look it, and no alcohol is served. They are a major force in property, industry, and politics. They too have to contend with the lures of modern decadence taking their children away.
