[Gold Room in Chester, PA on 7/28/13]

As rented rooms for Vietnam’s poorest, nhà trọ complexes usually have many rules, clearly posted. No drugs, no selling sex or flammable materials, no sheltering criminals, even if it’s just one night, no loud noises after 10PM or during siesta hours, no fighting. At Quốc’s nhà trọ, there was this unusual sign:

REQUEST:
RENTERS OF NHÀ TRỌ:
MONEY, GOLD KEEP ON YOUR PERSON:
LEFT AT HOME, IF LOST, NO YELLING, YOU MUST DEAL WITH IT

Judging from her prose and punctuation, this nhà trọ owner’s level of education is about the same as her tenants’. With more than a dozen rentals, she’s a lot richer, though.

There were other signs. Seeing them made me think immediately of ghetto bars. The Gold Room in Chester, PA, has these posted:

NO BABY MOMMA OR BABY DADDY DRAMA!
IF INTOXICATED, DO NOT COME IN!!! (TURN AROUND)
FIRST FIGHT, LAST FIGHT!
NO OUTSIDE ALCOHOL
NO INAPPROPRIATE TOUCHING!
NO RUNNING!
RESPECT EVERYONE
NO TANK TOPS & NO SAGGY PANTS

Lion’s Den is an Indian owned ghetto bar in North Charleston, SC. It bars everyone under 30.
