[Lào Cai, right on the border with China, on 2/13/20]

Even in Vung Tau, Trump, the Sequel is a hit. Old man in orange shirt, “He won because there’s a guy who gave him a million or a billion dollars a day.”

Liên, “A million!” It’s 4:17AM at the café on General Uprising. “There’s a nation that serves its people. It’s not just one president, but all of them. How old is it, two hundred years? It has gone from this tiny, wild place to being the ruler of the world!”

More, “A US president is the leader of the world. You can’t have someone like Hillary facing Putin and Xi.” Liên means Kamala. “No one would take her seriously.”

To most Vietnamese, a leader should look like one. There’s a term, “tai to mặt lớn,” meaning “large ears big face.” When Kerry ran, many Viets laughed at his horse face. South Vietnam’s Nguyễn Văn Thiệu looked presidential. Nguyễn Cao Kỳ didn’t.

Liên is on a roll, “With Trump in, they just announced no more missiles will be fired into the Red Sea. Ha, ha! Of course they must stop or America would smash them!” Liên means the Houthis of Yemen.

Liên also stresses illegal immigrants won’t be able to cross into the US from Mexico. Though this hurts Viets also, it must be done. Then, “A relative in California tells me everyone there is celebrating. I say, ‘Isn’t California Democratic?’ She says all the Viets she knows are Republicans. Only the rich are Democrats.”
