Just ordered the paperback (South-London reader here), I just want to take a random moment if I can to express my love for Vietnam and it's people (connections via Thanh Hóa), my love for your Night, Again book, and the feelings I'm getting delving into watching your SubStack; thank-you.
Just days ago, I showed a Brit around Vung Tau. I took him to a local museum founded by a Brit. Very unusual place, and rather magnificent. We met the guy and talked to him.
Quite surreal, reading of the place just last night in Gunboat on the Yangtze by Tran Vu (Nina McPherson and Phan Huy Duong did an incredible justice keeping the atmosphere in that story.)
Will be wrapping the book up in two stories' time, starting The Sorrow of War tomorrow, the whole collection is just incredible; A Marker on the Side of the Boat by Bảo Ninh (translated by yourself), In the Recovery Room by Mai Kim Ngọc (translated by Nguyễn Quí Đức), and the above, standing out head-and-shoulders for me.
When I go with my gia dinh (wife and kids) to my wife's place in Thanh Hóa, I'd love to reach out in person some time with you for a beer and a chat
